Cover Crop The Benefits of a Cover Crop
Have you ever noticed the pretty yellow mustard flowers that pop up after the winter rains throughout California wine country? These beautiful flowers also serve a very important purpose in the vineyard. Mustard flowers, part of the brassica family, possess a natural compound that fights malignant pathogens that live in the soil. Known as biofumigation, this relationship benefits the overall well being of the vines.
The symbiotic relationship between the mustard flowers and the soil is an organic way of keeping pathogens out of the soil without the use of harsh chemicals or pesticides. In our winemaking and winegrowing processes we try to be as natural as possible in order to bring out the truest expression of the Boars’ View Vineyard.
