BOARS' VIEW

Planted in 2007, the Boars’ View vineyard is just under 14 acres and located near the town of Cazadero along Bohan Dillon Road in the Fort Ross – Seaview AVA. Thoughtfully designed to take advantage of the multiple soil types, we cultivate nearly 10 acres of Pinot Noir, specifically farming Calera, Mt. Eden and Swan heritage clones of Pinot Noir and just under two acres of Wente clone Chardonnay. This acreage naturally limits our yields and the unique clones allow Thomas to thoughtfully separate hand harvested lots to create our expressive pinot noirs and chardonnay.

ESTATE PINOT NOIR

The vineyard is primarily composed of Goldridge Loam soil that shows a yellowish, fine sandy surface and offers excellent drainage with low fertility — ideal for cultivating low yield, high quality Pinot Noir with full body and expansive character.

Our vines are in their prime, the ‘sweet spot’ of their development offering yields with considerable concentration and consistency from which we can make the most expressive, elegant wines possible.

WINEMAKER NOTES

In 2023, winter rains, which continued into the late Spring was incredibly beneficial for our wells and groundwater supply. The cool Spring kept soil temperatures low and delayed budbreak. Once the vineyard woke, the cover crop flourished as did the vigorous canopy growth going into the Summer months. June – August, we experienced mild temperatures with almost no heat spikes. This cooler, moderate trend continued into the Fall, and harvest occurred a few weeks later than typical for the Boars’ View Estate. The prolonged hang time allowed for the fruit to develop exceptional levels of maturity and complexity across the board. All blocks were handpicked at night and delivered to the winery in the early hours of the day. This was a classic West Sonoma Coast growing season.” – Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown.

CRITICAL PRAISE,  Rated 96 This vintage created a confluence of quality and quantity at the Boars’ View Estate Vineyard. This will be a vintage to remember for its abundance of dazzling, complex fruit paired with architectural structure and focused minerality. The wine possesses a dark garnet hue in the glass with a rose-hued halo. Vivid aromas swell from the glass, suggesting notes of cedar bough, plum skin, and mint. The sleek palate has a round mouthfeel, layered with notes of black cherry, oolong tea, and violet. The finish extends for a lengthy amount of time, providing ample opportunity to reflect on this dynamic wine from an excellent vintage. This is a vintage where the stars aligned and the result in bottle is one to be savored. – Audrey Frick, www.jebdunnuck.com

ESTATE CHARDONNAY

While the Goldridge Loam covering the lower slopes was a perfect fit for Pinot Noir, we knew this small plot of clay soils called for Chardonnay, so we planted the Wente Chardonnay clone. Our Boars’ View Estate Chardonnay is an incredibly rich wine, offering wonderful fruit aromatics, opulence, and cellarability that are a signature of some of the finest Chardonnays grown on the West Sonoma Coast.

WINEMAKER NOTES

“Our estate, Chardonnay, is incredibly limited. since we farm just under two acres on our estate vineyard. The 2022 Boars’ View estate Chardonnay was noted by its very small berry size, resulting in a complex flavor profile expressing multi-faceted Chardonnay notes with gravitas. The wine displays a golden yellow hue in the glass with a faint trace of pale green upon closer inspection. The tightly woven aromas suggest white peach, and lime pith. The palate is marked by a wonderfully polished mélange of Asian pear, Meyer lemon, brass and river rock. There is a pleasing amount of vibrant acidity that frames the palate, energizing the trajectory and carrying through to a fragrant floral finish.” — Winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown

CRITICAL PRAISE, 94 Points. Farmed from the top of the slope where there’s more clay in our soil, and best suited for Chardonnay, the 2022 Boars’ View “The Coast” estate Chardonnay… full-bodied, it fills the palate with a luxurious feel but stays light on its feet and comes into focus on the finish with a light chalky texture and a clean finish. It is going to drink well over the next 8-10 years. — Audrey Frick, www.jebdunnuck.com

BDR PINOT NOIR

Our vineyard, located off Bohan Dillon Road, has more to share. Entering its second decade, the fruit has matured, our clones continue to express their unique characteristics, and we have come to know our rows intimately – knowing which are showered with the rays of the rising sun and which bask in the late afternoon warmth. At Boars’ View we also have more to tell, and felt we needed to expand our offerings to reflect the vineyard’s continuing evolution and introduce our Boars’ View BDR Pinot Noir. Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown relies on clonal selection and barrel regimen to craft a wine that is enjoyable upon release and a few years to come.

WINEMAKER NOTES

If the Boars’ View Estate Pinot Noir is the showboat wine in the Boars’ View collection, the Boars’ View BDR Pinot Noir acts as the brooding dark star. The 2023 vintage produced a striking, structured wine marked by crisp minerality and a refreshing salinity. The sauvage bramble fruit is complemented by notes of crushed rock and mouth-watering acidity. In the glass, the wine exhibits a dark ruby hue. Aromatic notes suggest boysenberry, purple lilac, ocean air, rhubarb, and rose oil. The palate is marked by a densely layered dark fruit core suggesting plum reduction, quince, river rock, lavender, and pomegranate. This is one of the finest vintages we have had the pleasure of working with in many years. – Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown

CRITICAL PRAISE, Rated 95+ From the lower part of the vineyard, with more richness and depth, the 2023 Pinot Noir BDR is a deep red color and opens to dark notes of cherries, dark berries, mossy earth, wild herbs, and dark earth. Full-bodied, it has ample fruit on the palate with a dark mineral undercurrent. Tightly coiled and nervous, with a structured grip, it’s going to benefit from another year in bottle, when I anticipate it will improve. Drink 2027-2047. – Audrey Frick, www.jebdunnuck.com
